Crown lengthening is a procedure used to increase
the amount of tooth which is above the gum line. Crown lengthening may be needed when a tooth breaks below the gum line
or when the soft tissue covering teeth has not receded properly during the eruption process. Before veneers or crowns
can be placed on the teeth, the gum surrounding the tooth is reshaped to expose more of the natural tooth, thus enabling restorative
or cosmetic dental procedures. The example below shows the before and after effects of crown lengthening the lower teeth.

When crown lengthening is performed, some bone and gum tissue is removed around each tooth, so that there is more tooth
structure remaining above the gum line.
