Periodontal Disease | Virginia Beach, VA

Periodontal Disease (gum disease) is a bacterial infection in the gums and bone that support the teeth. It is the leading cause of tooth loss among adults.

Periodontal disease is caused by plaque, a sticky colorless film that forms on the teeth. Daily home care, including proper tooth brushing and flossing, is essential to preventing plaque buildup.

If plaque is not removed, it can harden into a substance called calculus, also known as tartar. Calculus is a hard mineral-like substance that can only be removed through professional tooth cleaning. The calculus that forms beneath your gum line irritates the gum tissue, creating chronic inflammation and an infection which can lead to bone loss, mobile teeth, and eventual tooth loss.

If not treated, periodontal disease can lead to serious health risks. Periodontal disease has been linked to cardiovascular disease and pre-term low birth weight babies. Early treatment of periodontal disease can not only save your teeth, but also may lower your risk of developing other  systemic diseases.
