In the early to moderate stages of periodontal disease, non-surgical treatment is often effective. Scaling and root planing (a cleaning of root surfaces to remove tartar and plaque that has accumulated
under the gum) combined with antibiotics can help restore your gums to their optimum health by reducing or eliminating any
pockets around the teeth which might harbor infection.
Patients with chronic or advanced periodontal disease may require more aggressive
treatment measures. Periodontal gum surgery is necessary
to eliminate any diseased pockets that might remain around your teeth following a non-surgical root planing procedure. If
the periodontist sees unhealthy gum tissue which requires surgical treatment, he will commonly prescribe gum and/or bone grafting, tissue regeneration (further removal of disease-causing bacteria), and/or additional pocket reduction. Local anesthesia is used to assure your comfort during treatments, and most of our patients feel little to no discomfort
afterwards.
